Abstract

Perceptions of ageing are different from individual to individual. Evidence suggest that there are several multidimensional images related to aging and the elderly that can lead to systematic stereotyping practices and discrimination based on age. Nevertheless, there are little information about the scope and the impact of these images in Europe and particularly in the Portuguese context. According to literature, health professionals
are not unrelated to these images and practices, being unclear the impact they have on physical activity of the elderly. This has leads us to the review of the literature, in April of 2013, through the period 1999-2013. We conclude that there are few studies that provide clear data showing how these images and the ageist  practices influence physical activity among the elderly. Therefore, it is from major importance to develop new studies that contribute
to a better understanding of this influence and its consequence.
