The purpose of this study is to verify the existence of positive experiences and feelings resulting from caring for terminally ill older adults. The sample consisted of nine direct care assistants from three residential care facilities in a northern municipality of Portugal. Data collection took place between January and February 2013. This is an exploratory qualitative study with a phenomenological approach. Positive experiences identified in elderly care included doing one’s best, proximity, responsiveness and preparation. Regarding positive feelings, affection, caring, a sense of accomplishment, pride, relief and enjoyment were highlighted. Despite the apparent difficulties of end-of-life care, the findings indicate that caregivers are able to derive meaningful benefits from their professional practice.
