Life trajectories and the choice of the social support system in the municipality of Mira
Keywords:

The process of double aging is universal and, in Portugal, has been accompanied by an increase and diversification of social support systems. Given this reality, there is a need to investigate the life events that influence the choice of support systems. This study aimed to understand whether life trajectories influence this choice and to identify significant life events associated with it. This is an exploratory quantitative study conducted in 2015 in the municipality of Mira, with a sample of 255 older adults, of whom 130 did not use any social support system and 125 were covered by social support services. A closed-question survey covering several areas, such as life events, aging and use of services, was applied. Results showed a relationship between care choice and cohabitation, indicating that older adults who live with others prefer family care.
