Older people, comorbidities and healthcare-associated infections (HAIs): a case study
Keywords:

The cross-transmission of microorganisms by the hands of health professionals is considered the main route for the spread of healthcare-associated infections. Studies show that adherence to control practices, particularly hand hygiene, can significantly reduce transmission. This case study analyses an elderly person with dementia who underwent surgery, aiming to understand health professionals’ practices regarding compliance with the five essential moments for hand hygiene. The results suggest that health professionals’ beliefs about the need for hand hygiene constitute a barrier to compliance with World Health Organization recommendations.
